Planning

I started receiving the More Math and More Literacy Workbooks from Mother Goose Time a few months ago. I really like them, but didn't feel like I was using them to their full potential. They are really cute and go with each months theme and work on the skills that I was wanting my son to be practicing. They help to make this program appropriate for my 5 year old, we have only been using them for fun at this point though. Mostly because summer left us feeling like taking it easy on everything and getting outside as much as possible. We have to get the sunshine time in while we got it. Rain will be coming for us again soon. But now that fall is nearing and we are starting to get back into the school groove I started thinking about how I could better use these fabulous workbooks. I decided that it would be best if I could match them up with whatever skill we worked on for the day in our Teachers Guide. Now that does mean a little more planning for me, but Mother Goose Time has all the skills so clearly labeled that it really didn't take any time at all to organize it. Our not back to school day, or maybe I should call it our back to home day will be after labor day on Tuesday September 2. I decided to show you all a sample of how our first week back will look with my new plan. I am only going to focus on the Literacy and Math portions of the day. Mother Goose Time has so many other activities included each day then what I am showing.

Monday- We will have no school Monday because we will be attending the Penny Arcade Festival! This is a huge gaming festival held yearly in Seattle and other cities. It will be our first time attending and my kids have been working on their costumes for it. We are all really excited.

Tuesday- For math we will do the Measure Me activity found in the Teachers Guide and then use the Measure Me activity in the More Math workbook to practice. For literacy I will have him practice writing his name for the My Name activity in the Teachers Guide.

Wednesday- For Math in the Teachers Guide we will do the Tangram body activity and then follow with the Copy the Shape Face in the More Math workbook. We will also use the More Literacy Clothesline Fun activity for practice with following verbal instructions.

Thursday- For math we will do Button Patterns in the Teacher Guide and I will use the Doodle Patterns page from the More Math workbook for more pattern fun. For Literacy we will do the B Ball Roll from the Teachers Guide and then make the My Body Book from the More Literacy workbook where we can find all the B's in the story as well as demonstrate print knowledge.

Friday- For Math we will do the Body Part Lotto game in the Teachers Guide which will give more practice on patterns and sorting. We will not do a workbook page today for math. For literacy we will do the Handprint Journal activity which will work on emergent writing skills. We will also do the Letter B page in the More Literacy workbook to practice writing, and continue learning about the letter B.

My hope is that we can learn a skill using our Mother Goose Time curriculum and then practice the skill using a workbook page. That way he will have plenty of oppurtunities to learn and practice what he has learned. I think I will like this better then randomly picking pages like we were before. There will be more structure to this and it will hopefully make more sense and help him to better retain information. I will try this out the first week and see how it goes.

Bug Homes

This week with  Mother Goose Time we learned all about Bug Homes. We talked about bugs that use plants as their homes, live in dirt, make hills, webs, and hives. This was such an interesting week especially for my older daughter. She had so many questions and these topics sparked so many conversations. I think our favorite day was about hives. We learned so much about bees and we even did a fun experiment. One activity we did was the Honeycomb activity. This was an invitation to create project so I set up everything that they would need and then let them create. This helped my son with his fine motor skills because we used little hexagon stencils to draw the picture, It also gave me a chance to have him verbally tell me what he included in is picture. He did a great job and retained quite a bit of information. I loved that after the project was over he was able to tell me what was going on in his picture. He included the hexagon cells of the honeycomb, them he ...

Black Tie Not Required

World Penguin Day was this week on April 25 and conveniently we had a day about Penguins in this months  Mother Goose Time box. I switched a few days around so that we could do the Penguin Day on World Penguin Day because what better way to celebrate this adorable birds special day then to learn all about them. We started off the morning by reading the suggested story in the Teacher Guide which gave us some really good information about penguins. After reading the story we used potatoes as eggs and tried balancing them on our feet like the daddy penguins do. It was pretty hard and we gained a lot of respect for those amazing dads! After this we played the Penguin Moves game from the Teacher Guide. It used the included pocket cube and the cube cards. This game had us waddling, hopping, and sliding to different letters and numbers as review. This was a lot of fun and a great way to get the wiggles out first thing in the morning. They especially...

More Literacy: Alphabet Island

We have learned so much this month with the  Mother Goose Time Alphabet Island theme. This has been sort of a wrap up month for the curriculum, we have reviewed numbers, letters, and colors that we have learned all through the year. We gotten to be pirates going on treasure hunts, ship captains discovering new islands, and cave explores searching for beautiful and amazing natural treasures. This curriculum comes with everything you need to have a well rounded and fun month of learning. And while all this is great they also offer add ons to help make this curriculum work for babies and toddlers or all the way up to about age 5 or 6. We have been receiving the More Literacy and More Math workbooks for a few months now and are really enjoying the added practice with the skills and concepts being taught. We don't use the books everyday right now, but I do see us using them more next year as part of our school day. The workbooks match the months theme and are r...
