Strength Training

Superhero training continued this week and we focused on Superpowers. We learned about Invisibility, Super Speed, Flight, Super Strength, and Super Breath.  Doing our regular schedule of school wasnt easy this week though. It was unusually hot here and because of fires North of us in Canada our air was and still is in unhealthy ranges. So when the air was clear we spent as much time outside as we could, and when the winds changed and it was unhealthy again we stayed inside with the windows closed, the fan on and a constant flow of homemade popsicles. We might have watched a little more TV then normal as well, but since a lot of the shows we watched had superheroes in them we will say it was research! The great thing about the Mother Goose Time themes and activities is that we can do them anywhere. We pretended to use our superpowers at the park, the grocery store, and out in the grassy area near our house. So even though we weren't super active with school this week we were still able to discuss a lot of the themes, read the suggested stories, and use imaginative play while we were out and about.

My favorite activity this week was the Barbell Make and Play that we did for the Super Strength day. We started off in the morning by painting our paper plates black and rolling up the black paper to make the bar. while the paint was drying we went to the grocery store because every growing super hero needs to eat. While we were at the store we talked about what it would be like to be super strong and I had them help me lift the heavy items and bags. we also talked about how lifting weights and heavy things help to make your muscles stronger just like eating healthy foods. I made sure to tell them that you have to make sure you lift safely so you don't accidently hurt your muscles instead of make them stronger. We practiced safe lifting with a box of fizzy water. When we came home we finished assembling the weights and then we played the Strength Training Game.

First I showed them both what each exercise should look like so they knew what to do if they landed on the square, I also let them practice the exercise. Then we took turns spinning the spinner and doing the exercise that we landed on. After we each had a chance to do each exercise a couple of times I took out my real 5lb weights so they could see what those were like. Preston attempted to lift them and try the exercises but they were to heavy for him. It gave us all a good laugh and we decided we would stick with the Mother Goose Time weights instead.

I am really excited for the next couple weeks of this theme. While learning about fantasy superheroes has been fun and inspiring I am excited that we will be learning about real life superheroes as well. I love that we will be learning about jobs and people that are working to save the world and make people safe. Superheroes don't only have to be amazing people from storybooks, they can also be amazing people working in your neighborhood and communities. Anyone can make a difference.

Bug Homes

This week with  Mother Goose Time we learned all about Bug Homes. We talked about bugs that use plants as their homes, live in dirt, make hills, webs, and hives. This was such an interesting week especially for my older daughter. She had so many questions and these topics sparked so many conversations. I think our favorite day was about hives. We learned so much about bees and we even did a fun experiment. One activity we did was the Honeycomb activity. This was an invitation to create project so I set up everything that they would need and then let them create. This helped my son with his fine motor skills because we used little hexagon stencils to draw the picture, It also gave me a chance to have him verbally tell me what he included in is picture. He did a great job and retained quite a bit of information. I loved that after the project was over he was able to tell me what was going on in his picture. He included the hexagon cells of the honeycomb, them he ...

Black Tie Not Required

World Penguin Day was this week on April 25 and conveniently we had a day about Penguins in this months  Mother Goose Time box. I switched a few days around so that we could do the Penguin Day on World Penguin Day because what better way to celebrate this adorable birds special day then to learn all about them. We started off the morning by reading the suggested story in the Teacher Guide which gave us some really good information about penguins. After reading the story we used potatoes as eggs and tried balancing them on our feet like the daddy penguins do. It was pretty hard and we gained a lot of respect for those amazing dads! After this we played the Penguin Moves game from the Teacher Guide. It used the included pocket cube and the cube cards. This game had us waddling, hopping, and sliding to different letters and numbers as review. This was a lot of fun and a great way to get the wiggles out first thing in the morning. They especially...

More Literacy: Alphabet Island

We have learned so much this month with the  Mother Goose Time Alphabet Island theme. This has been sort of a wrap up month for the curriculum, we have reviewed numbers, letters, and colors that we have learned all through the year. We gotten to be pirates going on treasure hunts, ship captains discovering new islands, and cave explores searching for beautiful and amazing natural treasures. This curriculum comes with everything you need to have a well rounded and fun month of learning. And while all this is great they also offer add ons to help make this curriculum work for babies and toddlers or all the way up to about age 5 or 6. We have been receiving the More Literacy and More Math workbooks for a few months now and are really enjoying the added practice with the skills and concepts being taught. We don't use the books everyday right now, but I do see us using them more next year as part of our school day. The workbooks match the months theme and are r...
