Emergent Writing

We just got back from a vacation to Southern California to visit my parents. It was a really nice trip and a nice warm break from the cold and the rain. Because of this we didn't get to do much with our Mother Goose Time curriculum yet. I am really excited for this months Winter Wonderland theme though, I had a chance to look through it before we left and we are in for another fun month of learning. One thing we did do before we left was our name tags. Every month we are sent a new name tag that matches the theme. Even though we are homeschoolers I still have them do the name tags. It is a great way for my son to practice learning to write his name, and we can look back at previous months name tags to see how much better we are writing. A fun twist on the name tags this month though was to trace the written name with glue and put glitter on it. I loved this because it gave an opportunity to work on fine motor skills. I wrote his name this time and then he carefully traced the letters in glue before sprinkling glitter on. He was so serious for this and really did a nice job tracing the letters.

They came out so cute and really make a nice addition to our school area. He is doing better with writing his name but still struggles with forming the letters so this was a fun way for him to practice. I love all the multi sensory ways of learning Mother Goose Time provides.

The other thing we did this week was to find the months picture book and pull it out for our plane ride. I brought it on the plane and we enjoyed reading a new book while we were flying. It is such a cute book and we had fun looking at the pictures in the plane. I also printed out the months color sheets and brought them along as well. It made the time go by so much easier.

Bug Homes

This week with  Mother Goose Time we learned all about Bug Homes. We talked about bugs that use plants as their homes, live in dirt, make hills, webs, and hives. This was such an interesting week especially for my older daughter. She had so many questions and these topics sparked so many conversations. I think our favorite day was about hives. We learned so much about bees and we even did a fun experiment. One activity we did was the Honeycomb activity. This was an invitation to create project so I set up everything that they would need and then let them create. This helped my son with his fine motor skills because we used little hexagon stencils to draw the picture, It also gave me a chance to have him verbally tell me what he included in is picture. He did a great job and retained quite a bit of information. I loved that after the project was over he was able to tell me what was going on in his picture. He included the hexagon cells of the honeycomb, them he ...

Lets Talk About Manipulatives...And a Give-Away!

I am so excited about this post!  Mother Goose Time has allowed us to do a giveaway with our readers! One lucky winner will win 2 bags of Mother Goose Time manipulatives. It will be a surprise what they give you but let me ease your mind, we have loved all the manipulatives they have sent so far. Each month of Mother Goose Time has a theme and everything you get works with that theme. This means you get a meaningful month of learning that is all planned out for you. Every month you get a new calendar set up as well as numbers, shape, and color to add to your circle time. You also get a storybook and a music CD that is matched to the months theme as well. But, I think the most fun items you get is the hands on stuff. They include a stamp to go along with the shape of the month, cookie cutters of the letters you will be focusing on, and 2 bags of really good quality manipulatives. This Months theme is Nursery Rhymes and we received a bag of sheep counters and a bag of lacing s...

Black Tie Not Required

World Penguin Day was this week on April 25 and conveniently we had a day about Penguins in this months  Mother Goose Time box. I switched a few days around so that we could do the Penguin Day on World Penguin Day because what better way to celebrate this adorable birds special day then to learn all about them. We started off the morning by reading the suggested story in the Teacher Guide which gave us some really good information about penguins. After reading the story we used potatoes as eggs and tried balancing them on our feet like the daddy penguins do. It was pretty hard and we gained a lot of respect for those amazing dads! After this we played the Penguin Moves game from the Teacher Guide. It used the included pocket cube and the cube cards. This game had us waddling, hopping, and sliding to different letters and numbers as review. This was a lot of fun and a great way to get the wiggles out first thing in the morning. They especially...
