Mothers Day Celebration

We have been happily learning all about Bugs and Crawly Things this month with our Mother Goose Time curriculum. We have gotten a little behind so far due to this great Forest School we have been going to, and let me tell you there are a lot of bugs to be seen in the damp Pacific North West Forest. The Banana slug is definately the biggest slug I have ever seen. We have also been seeing worms, and beetles as well. Such a great theme for Spring!

We took another break from our daily bags this week to use our Mothers Day Celebration Kit that came in this months box. We do a weekly Poetry Tea Time on Thursdays as part of my daughters Language Arts program and I thought that the Mothers Day Kit would pair perfectly with this. Plus I see no reason we shouldn't celebrate me twice this week. Here is a link to get a printable version of the Mothers Day kit in case you want to celebrate this weekend as well. So on Wednesday night I filled out the Invitations from the kit and left it on their beds for them to see before I went to work. The invitations make it feel like it is a special event, plus my kids are sentimental and like to keep things like this. I do not understand this at all, nothing brings me more joy then to donate or throw something out.


The first thing we did after our morning meeting and calendar was to read a Mothers Day book that we already owned. I realized I only have one Mothers Day book so I will need to fix that quickly. I just love a good book.


Then I set up the Owl Art project. This was such a cute project and looks really great hanging on our pantry. I almost didn't get to display them both because my son wants to hang his up by his bed. So basically it is a Mothers Day card for me that he is going to keep. I can tell when a project is good because it is immediately hung up in their bedrooms. This project required them to glue down the owl body and then cut out the feet and beak themselves. Then they used their hands to do the wings. My son HATES painting his hands. We deal with some sensory issues and getting paint on yourself is a big no no. He decided that he would paint hands on the owl instead so you will notice in the picture below that his owl has hand like looking wings that are hands but aren't...





After this I set up our tea. I purchased some egg and nut free scones and tea cookies because it was a Mothers Day celebration after all. Usually I would have them help me make something but we kept it easy this time.


Once we set the table and selected our poetry books to be read we sat down and read the If You Give a Mom a Muffin story. It came with story pieces that the kids could play with while I read. This was so cute and the kids really liked the story. It was similar to the If You Give a Mouse a Cookiebook which is a favorite at our house. My daughter even has written her own version of this kind of a story called If You Give a Cat a Fish. We read this story a couple times and it is still on our book shelf in easy reach.

We ended the day playing the Mom's Love Memory Game. These cards were also very cute, they featured moms and their babies. The idea was to put the pictures under plates and then toss a bean bag at a plate and flip it over. If you knew where the match was then you could toss the bean bag at the match or else try to guess which one matched. This was a lot of fun and a great way to get some energy out since it was a rainy day. You could also use the cards to make a memory type game where you put them on the floor and flip over cards trying to find matches. Here is a picture of the adorable cards.


This was such a lovely day and as always the celebration kits from Mother Goose Time were a huge hit. Next week our Poetry Tea Time is gong to have a bug theme and we are gong to eat bug themed snacks. I need to search for some good bug poems now. More Literacy: Alphabet Island

We have learned so much this month with the  Mother Goose Time Alphabet Island theme. This has been sort of a wrap up month for the curriculum, we have reviewed numbers, letters, and colors that we have learned all through the year. We gotten to be pirates going on treasure hunts, ship captains discovering new islands, and cave explores searching for beautiful and amazing natural treasures. This curriculum comes with everything you need to have a well rounded and fun month of learning. And while all this is great they also offer add ons to help make this curriculum work for babies and toddlers or all the way up to about age 5 or 6. We have been receiving the More Literacy and More Math workbooks for a few months now and are really enjoying the added practice with the skills and concepts being taught. Mother Goose Time Our Way

When I first started homeschooling I wrote out schedules and times for when we would do certain subjects and activities. I pretty much drove myself crazy trying to keep up with our strict schedule. I felt stressed and most of all I felt like I was failing. I've come a long way since then. Our homeschool is so much more relaxed and homey feeling. I think the biggest change I made is going by a routine instead of a schedule. A schedule is so rigid and gives you this feeling that you can't stray from the schedule. A routine, for me anyway, is so much more flexible, and  Mother Goose Time has fit in so seamlessly with our routine. In fact I will be a little sad when my kids are to old for this program because I love the way Mother Goose Time enhances what we do each day. Measurement and Estimation

Ever since we started receiving the More Math and More Literacy workbooks from  Mother Goose Time as an add on to our normal monthly curriculum I have noticed such a difference in my sons learning. He loves these workbooks. He likes having workbooks to do while his older sister is doing her work and I like that they provide extra practice in the skills he is developing. Earlier this week we worked on estimation and measurement. He started off by cutting out the different sized moths and a ruler. I let him cut them out so he could get better at his cutting skills, he still has a little trouble with this but did a very good job cutting out the moths. After cutting them out we spread them out on the table and I asked him to put them in order from largest to smallest. I asked him to guess by looking at them which was the largest and once he picked the biggest one out we used the ruler to measure it. Then I asked him to pick out the next biggest moth and we measured that...
