Hot Cross Buns

We are finishing up our month of Nursery Rhymes with Mother Goose Time. I kept the Hot Cross Buns day to use when we had time to do all the activities. I knew this was going to be a fun day and I really wanted to be able to do everything. We started the day by reading the Nursery Rhyme, doing the coloring page and reading the recommended book. Then we did the Stacking Buns activity. It was a fun card game that was like a simplified version of Uno. It used cards that were in the shape of little buns, and everyone got 4 cards each. The first player put a card down and then the next player had to see if they had either a matching color, shape, or number. If they had a match then they put their card down. If they didn't have a match they picked a bun card off the pile. We went around the table until someone had no more buns left. We played this game 3 times and decided it would be one we keep out for awhile.

After this we used the Included Recipe Card to make biscuit Buns. We were really excited to do this. My daughter read all the ingredients and supplies that we would need and we gathered everything. Then They took turns putting the ingredients in and mixing. Cutting the butter in was their favorite thing to do because we had to do it by hand since I don't own a pastry cutter.

Once we put the biscuits in the oven we did the Invitation to create activity. I thought this would be fun to do while we waited for the biscuits to bake. I got everything set up and then let them create.

They each decided that they would make the paper circles into buns. They used icing bags of glue to attach raisins, oats, and cinnamon to their buns. They both really loved this activity. And even though it was painful to watch my son do this I took a deep breath and let him go. He really enjoyed this and I didn't want to take away from that by stepping in and making him do things a different way so I wouldn't freak out about the mess. I busied myself by washing the dishes so I wouldn't have to see. In the end he didn't do to bad and he helped clean up.

Once they were finished we put them in the window to dry. And believe me they will need a while to dry! Once they are dry they are going to use the plates that were included with the supplies to serve the buns. So this might happen next week... haha!! They were really cute and smelled good too.

By the time they were finished with this our biscuit buns were done and cooled. We made some icing to put on top so they would look like the Hot Cross Buns.

They were really good and a great addition to our lunch. We love the days that have recipes. Both the kids are really engaged when they are learning to cook. We have 1 more day of Nursery Rhymes and then next week we will start our March box, At the Pond! If you want a sneak peak check out the Mother Goose Time website to see what we will be learning in March. We are so excited!

More Literacy: Alphabet Island

We have learned so much this month with the  Mother Goose Time Alphabet Island theme. This has been sort of a wrap up month for the curriculum, we have reviewed numbers, letters, and colors that we have learned all through the year. We gotten to be pirates going on treasure hunts, ship captains discovering new islands, and cave explores searching for beautiful and amazing natural treasures. This curriculum comes with everything you need to have a well rounded and fun month of learning. And while all this is great they also offer add ons to help make this curriculum work for babies and toddlers or all the way up to about age 5 or 6. We have been receiving the More Literacy and More Math workbooks for a few months now and are really enjoying the added practice with the skills and concepts being taught. We don't use the books everyday right now, but I do see us using them more next year as part of our school day. The workbooks match the months theme and are r...

Mother Goose Time Our Way

When I first started homeschooling I wrote out schedules and times for when we would do certain subjects and activities. I pretty much drove myself crazy trying to keep up with our strict schedule. I felt stressed and most of all I felt like I was failing. I've come a long way since then. Our homeschool is so much more relaxed and homey feeling. I think the biggest change I made is going by a routine instead of a schedule. A schedule is so rigid and gives you this feeling that you can't stray from the schedule. A routine, for me anyway, is so much more flexible, and  Mother Goose Time has fit in so seamlessly with our routine. In fact I will be a little sad when my kids are to old for this program because I love the way Mother Goose Time enhances what we do each day. Our morning routine pretty much starts off the same each day. We start with what I like to call Breakfast and books. This is the time that I introduce the Daily Topic for the day. Mother Goose Time provides a Da...

Measurement and Estimation

Ever since we started receiving the More Math and More Literacy workbooks from  Mother Goose Time as an add on to our normal monthly curriculum I have noticed such a difference in my sons learning. He loves these workbooks. He likes having workbooks to do while his older sister is doing her work and I like that they provide extra practice in the skills he is developing. Earlier this week we worked on estimation and measurement. He started off by cutting out the different sized moths and a ruler. I let him cut them out so he could get better at his cutting skills, he still has a little trouble with this but did a very good job cutting out the moths. After cutting them out we spread them out on the table and I asked him to put them in order from largest to smallest. I asked him to guess by looking at them which was the largest and once he picked the biggest one out we used the ruler to measure it. Then I asked him to pick out the next biggest moth and we measured that...
